We have three days here in Redmond, Oregon, and we're busy exploring the mountains and geographical features of the area. We drove to Mt. Bachelor first and rode the lift up to have a look around and grab some lunch. It is really beautiful up there. Today was opening day of the summer season, and there seem to be some issues with the food service. It took a really long time, and the food was quite cold (pizza) by the time we got it. There was a frisbee golf course on top of the mountain. We spent some time watching others play. We were quite surprised at the lack of people up there overall.

After our Bachelor jaunt, we headed into the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The lava flows and volcanic features are quite impressive in here. We drove up Lava Butte, which is a cinder cone surrounded by lava within the Newberry caldera. The eruption that produced this lava flow was believed to have taken place about 7000 years ago.

We finished the day by going for a swim back at the hotel and then attempting to go out to dinner. Dinner proved to be more difficult than expected, as almost all of the restaurants in town were either closed at 7 or altogether. We finally found a place that took pity on us and let us in at 7:40 -- twenty minutes before closing time.
The kids are outside watching fireworks, as I type this. Happy Independence!
